Sewing classes at Ed’s Workshop
Spaces currently available.
Calling all aspiring sewers! Ed’s Workshop is expanding its textiles department and from March 2026 we are excited to be offering beginner sewing classes for the public. The classes will be held in our brand new textiles space in Sheffield city centre. All experience levels are welcome. Our beginner classes are perfect for trying your hand at sewing for the first time, or if you are experienced and looking for support with your projects our intermediate classes will be starting in the summer.

Meet your tutor: Lizzy
“My practice draws from my former career in the fashion industry, ten years based in London as a designer. I graduated from the Royal College of Art, M.A. Fashion Design in 1993. More recently I graduated as a mature student from Hallam University in Sheffield, M.A. Contemporary Fine Art. I am a qualified lecturer having taught across BTEC, HND and Degree level courses via Chesterfield College/Derby University, Wakefield & Sheffield Colleges plus UCL and the Open University. Via teaching I enjoy drawing out new ideas and concepts and supporting students on their own personal creative journeys. Currently, I work within the community setting up art-based classes that embrace all abilities.
As an artist I focus on utilising the discarded. Pieces are constructed using foraged fabrics and unloved materials. Recycling, sustainability and ethical principles are at the heart of my art practice. I am a skilled designer utilising textile and making methods including pattern cutting, clothing manufacture, weave, embroidery, applique, eco-dyeing, stitch, collage, printmaking plus felting techniques.”
Beginner courses
Our beginner courses are designed for people at the start of their sewing career. Over a three, four or five-week beginner course you will work on a bespoke project, such as an apron, chosen to teach you a range of basic skills while also being great for arts and crafts or baking. You will learn to use a pattern, cut fabric, and set up and use basic stitches on a sewing machine. You will also have the opportunity to add your own individual touches to suit your style and needs. With our small class sizes, you will have personalised guidance and support. By the end of the course you will have developed the base skills and confidence needed to pursue your next project. Aspiring sewers have chosen to continue on courses with us working on new projects that consolidate their foundation skills.
