Woodwork taster sessions at Ed’s Workshop
Spaces currently available.
One-off taster sessions
Designed specifically for beginners, this hands-on workshop will introduce core woodwork skills through making a mini, lidded jewellery box.
Making the box will give an introduction to:
- Reading the wood and understanding the grain
- Measuring and marking with accuracy
- Basic sawing and drilling
- Shaping and smoothing using a plane and sanding
- Using dowel joint for assembly
- Applying finishes to complete your piece
As with all our courses, we keep group sizes small, so places are limited to a maximum of 6 people.
We’re running this session 6-9pm Wednesday 8th July and we’ll repeat it 6–9pm on Wednesday 22nd July. Both sessions have identical content and are standalone, so the expectation is that people would attend just one of the dates. The cost is £50 per person, which includes materials.
Please contact EdsWorkshop@peterrowe.co.uk to book or find out more.

This course will be run by Jo:
Jo has extensive experience teaching woodwork including 20 years as a D&T teacher, working as a Carpentry and Joinery Technician at Sheffield College, and as a Carpentry, Joinery and Technical Drawing Tutor for a women’s training scheme. She has also taught in community groups for artists and makers. She holds a degree in Fine Art, a PGCE in D&T, a City & Guilds Carpentry and Joinery qualification with distinction and is qualified in teaching post 16s.
Across her career Jo has worked with groups facing personal and social challenges. She fundamentally believes that anybody can use their hands to make things and that doing so can have the transformative power of building self-esteem, confidence, and problem solving and social skills.

Classes are held in Carver House, a former cutlery works in the heart of the city that embodies Sheffield’s industrious and crafting heritage. Its history continues to inspire Ed’s Workshop’s makers and craftspeople today.
